SPORTS - “Girls' Basketball Struggles Through First Half of Region Play”

BEAR RIVER HIGH - By Tate Atkin, Headliner Sports Editor, February 1, 2023

Region has not been kind to the girls' basketball team at Bear River High this season. The Lady Bears started region play 0-3 after tough losses to three very hard teams, including a heartbreaking 1-point loss to Mountain Crest High.

Looking to turn things around, the Lady Bears traveled to Logan High School on January 25. The one-win Grizzlies were just what the Bears needed to get back on track. Bear River started the game with a 20-5 first quarter lead. They also outscored the Grizzlies, 16-7, in the third quarter and it was those high scoring quarters for the Bears that propelled them to a 55-32 win, their first in region.

Senior Lexie Westmoreland led the Bears in scoring with 17 points to go along with 3 steals on the defensive end. Senior Gracie Riley had a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. She also had 3 assists and 4 steals. Senior Jenna LaCroix scored 12 points and added 5 assists and 3 steals.

The Bears then hosted Green Canyon High on January 27, and had a difficult time getting started scoring just two points in the first quarter while Green Canyon put up 15 to take an early lead. Bear River cut into the deficit in the second quarter and went into the halftime trailing the Wolves, 25-17, but had similar struggles starting the second half and Green Canyon pushed their lead to 43-25 by the end of the third quarter. The struggles in the first and third quarters were too much to overcome as the Bears lost another region game, 53-41.

Riley scored 18 points and was just one rebound shy of recording another double double with 9 rebounds. LaCroix scored 10 while adding 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Senior Crystal Park put up 4 points on the scoreboard and grabbed 7 rebounds with 2 assists.
